Birmingham children’s services sackings included managers

The six Birmingham social care staff members sacked over failings in the children’s services department included managerial staff.

Although the council refused to release any further details, a spokesperson told Community Care that managers were included in the staff let go, even though children’s services director Colin Tucker told Radio 4’s Today programme this morning that the sackings involved only frontline staff.

Les Lawrence, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “We’re looking at staff on all levels. Where people do not show they’re up to the mark, it doesn’t matter if they’re senior or not: we’ve set ourselves a mission that we have got the best and that we will attract the best.”

Lawrence emphasised the dismissals had nothing to do with the Khyra Ishaq case.

“What we’re undertaking is a remodelling of the services, seeking to ensure that we have a highly skilled set of staff, able to fulfil the requirements put in place.”
