A female care worker has been jailed for sexually abusing a young girl more than 20 years ago.

June Higgins was 16 when she began repeatedly abusing her victim, who was 12, in the mid-1980s.

Higgins, now aged 40, of Salerno Drive, Liverpool, went on to become a support worker in adult care with Knowsley Council in the 1990s.

The abuse only came to light when the victim received counselling and felt able to report it to the police last year, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The allegations of abuse come to the council’s attention on 24 April 2009 and she was immediately suspended. She has since been dismissed.

Higgins was convicted of six counts of indecent assault at Liverpool Crown Court on 5 May and sentenced to two years in prison.

She has also been ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for the next 10 years.
