The Winterbourne View learning disability hospital is to close this week, three weeks BBC Panorama screened scenes of abuse there following an undercover investigation.

The last of the residents of the 24-bed hospital will be moved out on Thursday following efforts to find them other accommodation.

Community Care understands that the Care Quality Commission is in the process of deregistering the hospital to make it illegal for it to take new residents. But Castlebeck, the owners of the hospital, have already agreed to not fill any of the empty beds.

The news was broken today on Twitter by Terry Bryan, the nurse who reported the alleged abuse to management and the CQC, before a lack of action led him to turn to Panorama.

Police have arrested and bailed 11 people in relation to the case, pending further enquiries.
