Care applications to Cafcass declined 9% in the past year, the agency’s latest figures show.

Cafcass’s statistics for January 2014 show it received 883 care applications, down 9% on the 975 made in January 2013.

The figures are in line with previous Cafcass statistics that show declining volumes of care applications.

From April 2013 to January 2014 the service received 8,788 applications, down 4% on the same period in 2012/13 when 9,165 applications were made.

Should the trend for fewer care applications continue in February and March, the 2013/14 financial year will mark the first time in years that the number of care applications made to Cafcass has dropped.
