Conservative MP John Bercow will lead a review of services for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs, prime minister Gordon Brown said today.
Brown also announced plans for a standing commission on carers, which learning disabilities and carers campaigner Philippa Russell would help take forward, in tandem with care services minister Ivan Lewis.
During a speech to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations in London today, Brown said he favoured breaking through the sterile party divides to ensure that advice could be given by the best people, regardless of political persuasion.
Bercow, who is chair of the all-party parliamentary group on speech and language difficulties, will report his findings to children’s secretary Ed Balls and health secretary Alan Johnson.
