Background Information

Community Care magazine's Back on Track campaign is calling for justice for children and young people in custody. We need your help.

Overall Campaign Aims
Community Care is campaigning for a dramatic reduction in the number of children and young people being held in custody and calling for the greater use of community sentences instead.  We urge that custody is only ever used as a last resort and for the shortest possible length of time. For a full list of the campaigns aims click here.

How can I get involved?
We want as many people as possible to support the 'Back on Track' campaign. There are many ways you can get involved:

  • Attend the Working with Young People at Risk of Offending Conference held on 27th October 2004 at the ORT House Conference Centre, London. Click here for more details.
  • Sign our petition
  • Contact your MP. Tell them that you have heard about our campaign. Ask where they stand on the issue of young people in custody. Did they sign Hilton Dawson MP's early day motion (no.1397) supporting the Back on Track campaign and voicing concern at the violation of human rights of many of the 11,000 young people currently behind bars in the UK?
  • Write to your local paper with details of Community Care's campaign. This is a great way of starting a debate and raising the issue of youth justice with the general public.
  • Let us know what's happening in your area. Community Care wants to hear about examples of good practice (as well as what's going wrong with the system). Email us at comcare.news@rbi.co.uk or write to Community Care, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey, SM2 5AS.
