The Office for Disability Issues is to launch an independent living strategy for disabled people next year, the disability minister has said.
Commenting on the Office for Disability Issues second annual report, minister Anne McGuire said: “Early next year, the ODI will launch an independent living strategy aiming to give disabled people more choice and control over the services and support they need.”
In the last year the office has set up Equality 2025, a government advisory body of 23 disabled people and led the cross-government Independent Living Review to improve opportunities for the disabled. It also co-ordinated the UK's signing of the UN’s Convention on Disability Rights.
“In this past year, the ODI and key government departments have made good progress on the journey to equality for disabled people," McGuire said.
The government say they are aiming for equality for disabled people by 2025. The ODI, located in the DWP, coordinates policy development and service delivery for the disabled.
