The government today promised to invest £255m in supporting carers in its long-awaited national strategy.
The money will include £150m to fund short breaks over the next two years, £38m to help carers enter or re-enter the job market and £6m to support young carers.
The strategy also promises to pilot annual health checks for carers and to promote the use of direct payments to increase their choice and control over their lives.
Care services minister Ivan Lewis said: "Thousands of carers, irrespective of their roles or postcode, have told us they want a support system that is on their side, rather than a constant struggle and the right to a life of their own alongside their caring responsibilities.
"Today's historic announcement is the beginning of a ten year programme to give carers the recognition and status they deserve."
