Birmingham Council has confirmed that social workers will face formal disciplinary procedures over the Khyra Ishaq case.
The council confirmed that three staff, who included social workers, could be sacked if they are found to have behaved unprofessionally.
A council spokesperson said: "Three members of staff who took decisions in regard to the case are subject to a thorough investigation into what decisions they took. This will be conducted within the council's disciplinary procedures and will be overseen by an external, independent and suitably qualified person to ensure that it is done fairly."
The spokesperson would not specify whether the social workers were frontline staff or managers.
He added that the serious case review of the case had been completed but was still being inspected by Ofsted. He was unable to confirm a publication date.
Khyra Ishaq was seven when she starved to death in May 2008 due to the neglect of her mother and stepfather. The couple were jailed for manslaughter last month.
