A London council has launched a serious case review after a two year old girl was yesterday found stabbed to death and her mother seriously injured just days after the woman was assessed as having no mental health problems.
The woman, in her 20s, remains in a serious condition and while no arrests have been made the police are not thought to be actively seeking any other suspects.
A spokesperson from Barking and Dagenham Council said the woman had first come to the attention of the council on 8 August and an assessment had been carried out the following day by North East London Mental Health Care Trust which found she did not suffer from any mental health problems.
The spokesperson added: “The child concerned was not on the council’s child protection register and was not a child in care. The matter is being investigated by the police.”
The trust will also be conducting its own internal inquiry.
