Parents implore Danielle's uncle to surrender her body

The parents of the murdered schoolgirl Danielle Jones yesterday implored her "violent and obsessed" uncle Stuart Campbell to reveal where he has hidden her body.

Campbell, a self-employed builder, gave no sign of breaking his silence as he started a life sentence.

He was a predatory paedophile who preyed on dozens of girls, and had convictions going back 30 years.

Burglars should not be jailed, says law chief

In an attempt to lower the prison population, the Lord Chief Justice yesterday told judges and magistrates that burglars should not be sent to prison.

Lord Woolf urged the courts to give probation and community service sentences to thousands of burglars who would otherwise go to prison.

Rather than going to prison, burglars facing a sentence of up to 18 months should be given a non-custodial sentence supervised by the probation service, he said.

Game's up for lottery panel in the asylum handouts row

The National Lottery fund criticised for giving away over £60 million to asylum seekers and refugees, is to be abolished.

The Community Fund is to be swallowed up by another distributing body after ticket sales plunged by more than 100,000 when people became aware of where the money was going.

Now plans to give more money to groups assisting migrants are to be scrapped as officials agree a programme of grants to other causes.

Life for 'cherish the blood' killers

Three racist Asian men who bludgeoned and hacked a teenager to death in Peterborough because he was white, were yesterday jailed for life.

Shaied Nazir, Ahmed Ali Awan, and Sarfraz Ali, murdered Ross Parker as he walked along a footpath with his girlfriend 10 days after the September 11 attacks.

The 17-year-old, who the gang didn't know, was beaten with a hammer and stabbed with a 12-inch hunting knife.

Two car thieves guilty of killing a father

Two car thieves who murdered a man when he caught them outside his home were facing a life sentence yesterday.

Father-of-two Kevin Jackson was stabbed through the head with a screwdriver when he chased after the thieves.

Raees Khan and Rangzaib Akhtar showed no emotion when a jury at Leeds crown court found them guilty of murder.

No tuition fees if students work in public sector, hints Blair

Students who go into public sector jobs will be exempt from the government's proposed increases in tuition fees Tony Blair suggests today.

The prime minister describes this as one of the benefits of the "more flexible" system the government will introduce when it announces its review of higher education funding next month.

The plans also include allowing elite universities to charge higher fees.

Minister’s new targets on young offenders

New targets have been set by the Scottish executive for frontline agencies battling the problem of persistent offending by young people in Scotland.

Police, social work departments, the crown office and voluntary bodies will collaborate to speed up the time it takes for a young person to progress through the justice system and receive the most effective treatment for their case.

Christmas dread for homeless

One in six Britons dread Christmas, but the figure is dramatically higher for homeless people, says the charity Crisis.

More than half of all homeless people polled dreaded Christmas, with almost one third having to spend it alone.

Blow for health service shake-up

Plans to change the way that the NHS in Wales is run could cost millions more than expected.

Health minister Jane Hutt’s drive to restructure the service was dealt a major blow following a warning from Wales’ top financial watchdog about the amount of money that would be needed for the planned changes.

In a letter to the head of the NHS in Wales, Ann Lloyd, auditor general Sir John Bourn says that there could be "major uncertainties" with many of the estimated transitional and running costs.

He also warns about the cost of housing the 22 new local health boards that will replace the existing five health authorities.

‘Honeytrap’ abuser jailed for ten years

A south Wales man who abused children after turning his home into a ‘honeytrap’ has been jailed for 10 years.

Dennis Joy, of Cwmbran, had pleaded guilty to rape, gross indecency, 16 counts of indecent assault and two counts of allowing premises to be used for intercourse.

Judge David Morris at Newport crown court said that Joy had set up his home as an enticement to young children who were allowed to smoke and drink and engage in sexual activity, with which Joy joined in.

He added that Joy posed a continuing threat to children.

16-year-old boy gets life sentence

A 16-year-old boy was sentenced to life yesterday for kidnapping a six-year-old girl and attempting to rape and murder her.

The boy who was 15 at the time of the attack abducted the girl from near her home dragged her into woodland and tried to rape her. He then covered her half naked body with leaves believing that he had murdered her.

Judge John Griffiths at Cardiff crown court ordered that the boy should be registered as a sex offender for life, and said the parole board would not consider his case until he had served at least four-and-a-half years.
