Cash crisis escalates

Social services departments are in the firing line as local authorities finalise their budgets for 1995-6 and four - Newcastle, Gloucester shire, Shropshire, and Devon - agree to break their capping limits.

Cuts expected in social services budgets still to be finalised, include:

East Sussex - £1 million;

North Yorkshire - £1.2 million;

Devon - £3.4 million;

Oxfordshire - £3.5 million;

Leeds - £5 million;

Nottinghamshire - £5.2 million; and

Derbyshire - £7.6 million.

Local authorities expecting drastic cuts but yet to decide how much comes off the social services, include:

Durham - £15 million

Sheffield - £20 million

Hampshire - £20 million

Essex - £27 million

Kent - £30 million, with

Lancashire - £57 million.
