The London Borough of Redbridge is to carry out an investigation after a resident of one its sheltered accommodation homes was admitted to hospital and died after a nine-hour wait for treatment.
Thomas Rogers, 74, lived in Wood Green, Essex. When he collapsed unconscious against a radiator and was burned the warden called for an ambulance but his family were not contacted.
Staff at Whipps Cross University Hospital, Leytonstone, also failed to contact Mr Rogers' family and he died before they were informed that he was injured.
His family, who say it took the hospital 36 hours to inform them he had died alone, are now demanding a public inquiry.
A spokesperson for the council said it was "deeply saddened by Mr Rogers' death" and would be carrying out an investigation after the coroner's inquest.
