Free care for Scots in England

Older people in Scotland who move to care homes in England to be closer to their families will continue to benefit from free nursing and personal care despite having left the country.

The Scottish executive has confirmed that older people who are assessed as needing care in Scotland will continue to have their care paid for if they then move to a home south of the border.

But while Scottish residents who move south will pay nothing, the situation in England - where only nursing care will be free, not personal care - means there will be inconsistencies between English and Scottish residents in the same home. A report by the Care Development Group in Scotland, which has been examining service provision for older people, is expected at the end of the month.
