Private school probe into child protection

A private school for gifted children has been severely criticised by education inspectors over concerns of inadequate child care and child protection.

Cademuir International School in Moniave caters for gifted children from the age of eight to 20. Following an annual inspection, the school was told to improve the safety and care of children and to implement an effective policy on child protection including a code of practice and a formal complaints procedure for pupils. The school has been given four months to carry out the changes, after which time education inspectors will return.

Jack McConnell, education minister, said: "I am very concerned about the serious weaknesses in the school's provision. The care and safety of young people in residential settings is of prime importance."

If the school fails to address the issues by the time of the inspectors' next visit, the executive will have the power to raise an order of complaint against it with a view to closure.
