The manager of an Essex care home has pleaded guilty to endangering the lives of patients.

Angela Postill, who ran Carnarvon Lodge Residential Care Home in Clacton, admitted a charge before Chelmsford Crown Court of endangering human life or health by wilful neglect.

Postill denied two charges of manslaughter and these were ordered by the judge to lie on the file.

The court heard that residents had been given excessive quantities of salty fluids, sometimes by syringe into their mouths, on occasion leaving them bloated and incontinent.

The case came to light when a deputy matron at the home blew the whistle to police and social services. After the case Mike Leadbetter, Essex director of social services, said that Carnarvon Lodge had been closed following an inspection.

Postill will appear in court for sentencing at a later date.
