British Lions star
Jason Robinson and his team mates from Manchester’s Sale Sharks rugby club this
week launched a new after-school initiative to alert youngsters to the dangers
of drugs.
The scheme is among
more than 100 out-of-school-hours learning projects sharing a £15m grant from
the New Opportunities Fund.
The rugby club is
receiving £385,000 to raise awareness of anti-drugs and anti-smoking messages
among young people at 10 Lancashire secondary schools.
The scheme will use a
range of sports activities including high-tech fitness training.
“This is a first for
rugby union and is being seen as a prototype for further action within the
game,” said Sale Sharks head of community Wayne Morris.
Other projects
sharing the cash include football skills courses for girls and the setting up
of a school mini-zoo.
