Domestic abuse in Scotland is being tackled by the publication of the most comprehensive review of services and strategies ever published on the subject.
Preventing Violence Against Women: Action Across the Scottish Executive, was launched by Margaret Curran, deputy minister for social justice. The document covers the activities of all agencies including social work, health, the police and voluntary organisations.
Addressing the three themes of protecting women from violence, preventing violence and services to those who have been victims, the document covers a wide range of concerns. These include the need for safety in transport services, the role of schools, responsibilities of employers, tackling alcohol and drugs misuse and the role of housing departments.
Curran, who also chairs the Scottish Forum on Community Safety, said: "This document is not an end in itself but a step along the way to create a climate in Scotland in which violence is not tolerated."
The plan is backed up by proposals to broaden legislation to protect unmarried couples, children and neighbours as well as £17.5 million from the executive to increase refuges and encourage multi-agency working.
