A public inquiry into the sudden deaths of 18 heroin addicts in the west of Scotland last year has opened in Glasgow.
The deaths are believed to have been caused by contaminated heroin. Wider concern was raised when similarities were spotted between the deaths in Glasgow and a similar fate suffered by heroin addicts in the north west of England and Dublin. Heroin trading between Glasgow, Liverpool and Dublin is well established. The inquiry is expected to last for several weeks.
