The NSPCC is to set up a helpline for paedophiles who are receiving treatment but are unable to contact their social worker outside of normal office hours.

The new service will be operated by the charity's existing social work counsellors who will give advice to sex offenders who need extra help.

John Cameron, head of the NSPCC's child protection helplines, said the new service would be running by East next year. The number will not be advertised, only given to know sex offenders.

"If they have an issue with their treatment we can work with them. We can offer them advice over the phone," he said.

Cameron said if an NSPCC counsellor feared a paedophile was considering committing an offence social workers or the police would be informed immediately.
