Councils in England spent 7 per cent more on social services in 2000-1 than the previous year, according to statistics from the Department of Health.

During this period, councils spent £13bn on social services. The majority was spent on services for older people - 46 per cent, while 22 per cent of the total went to children and families services.

The money spent on social services doubled over the 10 years from 1990-1, according to the Statistical Bulletin.
