Number of looked-after children rises

The number of looked-after children at 31 March 2002 was 58,900, an increase of 1 per cent on the previous year, new statistics from the Department of Health reveal.

Of these, 65 per cent were placed with foster parents and 6 per cent (3,400) were placed for adoption.
