Young people continue to be at risk from alcohol

Public health messages are not working, Scotland’s chief medical officer Dr Mac Armstrong warned following the release of the Scottish executive’s latest Clinical Outcome Indicators on alcohol intake.

The new statistics reveal that the 16 to 24 age group were most likely to exceed recommended weekly levels of alcohol intake. Just less than half of males and a quarter of females in that age range were found to be consuming dangerous levels of alcohol on a regular basis.

In the population as a whole, alcohol-related deaths in Scotland have increased from one in 100 in 1990 to one in 40 in 1999. Around 10 per cent of hospital admissions are due to alcohol-related problems and the total cost to the NHS in Scotland is around £96m each year.
