Abuse of older people is most likely to take place in the older person’s own home, according to an analysis of calls to Action On Elder Abuse’s helpline.
Two thirds of abuse took place in the person’s own home, with only 11 per cent taking place in nursing homes and 10 per cent in residential homes.
In more than a third of cases the abuse was psychological, with a fifth of cases physical and a fifth financial.
The abusers were more likely to be male, and a relative. Paid workers represented 28 per cent of abusers.
Of the paid workers, nearly a third were care workers, 10 per cent were nurses, and four per cent were social workers.
