The Catholic Church is planning an advertising campaign on the importance of marriage that could undermine government plans to liberalise adoption laws.
The church is concerned with an amendment to the Adoption and Children Bill that would allow unmarried and lesbian and gay couples to adopt. A spokesperson for the church said: "If people aren't prepared to make a lifelong commitment to each other how can they commit to adopting a child?"
The bill, which is due to become law later this year, has been given the backing of MPs and is being debated in the House of Lords.
