Community groups tackling drug addiction in Scotland have been awarded £500,000 from the Scottish executive.

The funding is paid through the Scottish Communities Against Drugs fund set up by the executive to help local people design, and put in place anti-drugs projects tailored to meet the needs and priorities in the area they live.

In announcing the awards deputy justice minister, Richard Simpson, praised the inventiveness of the applications and said: "Community groups across Scotland have come with ideas to support those with drugs problems and their families, and they have developed innovative ways, using sport, theatre and technology, to get vital messages to young people about the dangers of drugs."

Over 50 awards were made across both rural and urban communities. Some of the larger awards went to the Princes Royal Trust Borders Carers Centre - Young Carers Drug Support (£26,567), Good News Ministries – Skate Aberdeen (£50,00) and the Forward Project in Dundee (£28,000).
