The Disability Rights Commission held its first Disability Rights Day earlier this week. The event, in Manchester, aimed to raise awareness of the commission and disability legislation.

The day's launch, in the city's main shopping area, King's Street, sought to encourage the public to consider the barriers faced by disabled people in everyday life. High street stores, including Next, Gap and Virgin, demonstrated their support for the day by using disabled mannequins in their window displays.

The day also included a radio campaign featuring real life case studies of discrimination.

Chairperson of the commission Bert Massie said: "This is a chance to spread the message of disability rights in one of the country's most vibrant cities."
