One million over-65s drink too much

The charity Alcohol Concern is urging more research to be carried out on alcohol misuse after its new report revealed that one million over-65s are drinking at unsafe levels.

The report also points to high levels of alcohol abuse among young women and men aged between 16 and 24, with around one million children living with parents who have drink problems.

The charity claims that not enough is known about the causes and impact of alcohol problems, with research often being fragmented, patchy and falling short of the needs of policy makers and planners.

"We know very little, for example, about the reasons why certain groups of people drink much more than others," said Eric Appleby Alcohol Concern's chief executive.

The charity recommends future research concentrates on alcohol's impact on different populations, on crime, and on the workplace. The role of prevention, protection and treatment also needs to be looked at further, it adds.
