London councils cut rape charity's funds

A charity supporting victims of rape has warned that it could be left without support after the Association of London Government cut its funding.

Women Against Rape learned last week that its £26,000 grant, which covers the organisation's core costs for the year, would not be renewed when it expired in January following a review of the Association of London Government's grant provision. The charity has received a grant from the ALG for the past 16 years.

An ALG spokesperson said: "The ALG grants committee felt that there are groups that are better able to provide a wider spread of services across London than Women Against Rape."

But Clare Glasman, a volunteer worker at WAR, said:"We have contacts in the disability community and are well known as a source of help. The alternatives they're suggesting do not have our experience."
