UK body urged for schools campaign

The Gloucestershire Special Schools Protection League has called for a national organisation to campaign against the closure of schools for disabled children and children with learning difficulties.

League chairperson Graham Barton said he had received more than 50 telephone messages, 30 e-mails and letters from many counties supporting the campaign.

"We want to form a national voice together to counter the wilder claims made in the name of inclusion," Barton said.

He said there was too much generalisation in the special needs field - the term covers everyone from people with English as a second language to those with autism.

Some children were self-mutilating as a result of being forced into mainstream provision, while others have been bullied, he added.
