A breakdown of the £4 billion government investment in Sure Start by 2005-6 set out in the spending review was announced by Charles Clarke, education secretary, writes Amy Taylor.
The detailed announcement includes the creation of more childcare places and the establishment of children's centres in disadvantaged areas.
£1 billion of the Sure Start investment will be made in 2003-04, £1.3 billion in 2004-05 and £1.6 billion in 2005-06. The breakdown is as follows:
