Recession blamed for charity's job cuts

A significant number of people are set to lose their jobs at the deaf people's charity RNID as a result of the downturn in the economy, the charity's chief executive announced last week.

John Low said that continued economic decline and an over-estimation of income from wills had forced them to reduce the number of staff.

He added that the RNID had to act now to reduce their planned 2003-4 expenditure by £1.2m.

Despite the loss of up to 19 staff, RNID said the redundancies would not affect their services to deaf and hard of hearing people. "Front-line services won't be affected because the job cuts apply to workers in support roles," a spokesperson said.
