Study backs launch of 'granny creches'

Companies should set up "granny creches" where their workers can leave their older relatives while they go to work, according to an influential think-tank.

The report, from Demos and supported by Age Concern England, says the development of such crŠches could offset demand for residential care.

The research states that if the retirement age in the workplace is increased, as the government wants, such a facility would be required as older people become more likely to have caring responsibilities.

It warns that ministers need to look at such measures if they are to encourage people to continue working later in life or risk suffering a negative reaction among the "baby boomer" generation - those born between 1945 and 1965.
