Buy bonds to build houses, survey says

Almost seven out of 10 people would invest in bonds that were used to buy houses for people with learning difficulties, according to a new survey.

The poll, commissioned by learning difficulty charity Mencap, found more than three-quarters of those questioned thought it was unacceptable that adults with learning difficulties had little choice about where they lived and that many would consider investing in housing to combat this.

The research covered 1,000 adults, as part of a campaign to highlight what the charity calls the "housing time bomb".

It says that, although 29,000 people with severe learning difficulties live with an older parent, only one in four local authorities are planning for when their parents can no longer look after them.

Mencap's housing arm Golden Lane Housing and social bankers Triodos Bank have launched an investment bond to raise £4m to provide life-long housing for people with learning difficulties as a way of tackling the issue.
