Ideas sought for parents

Responses are invited on how to improve support for parents. More universal parent support services are mooted, including parents’ information meetings at key transition points such as the transfer from primary to secondary school and a national helpline for parents. There is an emphasis on the importance of engaging fathers as well as mothers.

Specialist support may include expanded home visiting programmes for parents of young children, family group conferencing and relationship counselling. The green paper identifies parents of disabled children, families of young carers and children with parents in prison as needing better support. However, no extra money is promised beyond the £25m parenting fund announced in last year’s spending review and already the subject of consultation.
