Services for children in care in Wales are improving according to new data, although the number of looked after children in the principality has risen by 200 since last year, writes Alex Dobson.

Welsh local authority social services performance statistics show that 44 per cent of young people leaving care had an education qualification, compared with 33 per cent in 2002, and 84 four per cent of these young people obtained two or more GCSEs or GNVQs.

The percentage of young people in care at the age of 16 who had a suitable plan for their continuing care, rose from 89 per cent to 95 per cent. Children on child protection registers who had an allocated social worker, rose from 93 per cent to 99 per cent, and according to the statistics child protection cases in Wales that were appropriately reviewed rose from 64 per cent to 72 per cent.
