Local government leaders call for new board for older people in each area

An older people's partnership board should be set up in every local authority, according to a new discussion paper launched at the National Social Services Conference, writes Amy Taylor.

The paper, produced by the Local Government Association and the Association of Directors of Social Services, argued that older people's partnership boards in local authorities would ensure there is responsibility for strategic changes and co-ordination of resources.

It goes on to call for preventive services for older people and the promotion of their well-being to be seen as core functions of all agencies with a clear budget determined at national level.

Alison King, chairperson of the Local Government Association's social affairs and health executive, said: "We want to reclaim adult social care so that we are not merely seen as the warm up or follow up to the principle act of the NHS."
