Ceremonies for new citizens announced

Posted: 13 November 2003 | Subscribe Online

Graduation-style ceremonies for new British citizens are to be piloted in eight regions from January and rolled out across the country from April.

Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, it will become mandatory for successful citizenship applicants to take an oath and pledge their loyalty to the country at a ceremony organised by councils.

About 30 new citizens will be presented with a scroll and gift by superintendent registrars at each ceremony, which will also be attended by the mayor or council leader.

The wording of the pledge and nature of the ceremony have yet to be decided.
