Antisocial behaviour orders are to be introduced for the first time in Scotland to remove prostitutes from residential areas, writes Maggie Wood.
Lothian and Borders police force has given its backing to the
use of the orders by Edinburgh Council for the exclusion of
prostitutes.
A council spokesperson said: “These are residential areas
that have come under stress from sex industry workers and their
clients. The orders will target persistent offenders who come to
the attention of the police on a number of occasions.”
Prostitution in the Leith area of the city has led to increased complaints from residents since a ‘tolerance zone’ was ended two years ago. Many prostitutes now work in isolation and arguably in less safe areas of the city.
