Broadmoor's wards deemed 'unsuitable'

The quality of mental health care at Broadmoor hospital has been criticised in an inspection report from the Commission for Health Improvement.

It states that most ward areas are unsuitable and "cannot be considered an appropriate, humane environment for modern mental health care delivery".

The report says:"It is difficult to see, despite the endeavours of staff at all levels, how health care of a sufficiently high standard can be provided in many of the current buildings. Some lack basic amenities, standards of cleanliness and privacy."

In addition to Broadmoor, the report looks at the other forensic mental health services run by West London Mental Health NHS Trust, one of the largest mental health trusts in the country.

It finds that while the trust has a positive attitude to education and training, many staff are unsure how to access these services. In addition, attendance on its mandatory training programme is not always ensured, causing problems with courses on the management of violence and aggression.
