A leading fathers' rights campaigner has been appointed to the Equal Opportunities Commission, the government announced last week.

Duncan Fisher, the director and co-founder of Fathers Direct, is to become a commissioner at the EOC.

Fisher has already worked with the EOC on work and life balance issues through his role at Fathers Direct, which promotes shared parenting and caring roles between men and women.

The EOC, together with the Disability Rights Commission and the Commission for Racial Equality, will be absorbed into a new single equality commission under plans confirmed by the government last November. The start date for the new body, provisionally called the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, remains unclear.
