Children to discover donor origins

Posted: 26 January 2004 | Subscribe Online

Children conceived from sperm, egg and embryo donations will be able to find out more details about their origins, following an announcement from the government.

Under new rules, donor conceived children will be able to find out the identity of their donor once they reach the age of 18.

However, the new regulations will only apply to people who donate after 1 April 2005 and will not be retrospective. Consequently anyone who donated sperm, eggs or embryos before April 2005 will remain anonymous.

The changes, which are subject to parliamentary approval, do not mean that donors will have any financial or legal obligations towards any children born as a result of their donation.
