Charities spend on average 30 per cent less on training for their staff than other sectors, according to a survey published this week.

Agenda Consultancy, which specialises in management issues in the not-for-profit sector, finds that voluntary organisations spend £256 per employee compared with £366 in the public and private sectors.

It also finds that the annual staff turnover is 22 per cent in the voluntary sector, compared with 15 per cent in the public and private sectors.

However, the report, based on an analysis of 117 charities, reveals a lower rate of absence among voluntary sector staff.

Co-author Roger Parry said: "Voluntary organisations can use this information to pinpoint strengths and areas for development."
