Social care shrugs off road charges

Concerns that the £5 congestion charge in central London would negatively affect social care staff and services have proved largely unfounded.

Social care professionals in the eight London boroughs that the charge applies to are not exempt from the toll, unlike most health workers. A survey by Community Care revealed most of the affected boroughs paid the charge on behalf of their staff or encouraged them to use public transport or walk.

The eight-square mile congestion-charging zone was brought in by the Greater London Authority on 17 February 2003 to reduce the amount of traffic going through the capital.
