Proposal to ban pet sales to children

Children in Scotland may be banned from buying pet animals, under proposals now out for consultation.

A new animal welfare law is likely to follow the consultation and could restrict pet sales to over-16s.

The consultation document invites comment on raising the legal age, currently 12, for buying pets. It says, “There are concerns that children as young as 12 are legally able to purchase animals from pet shops, possibly on a whim and without parental consent.”
