This essential guide for anyone working in community care provides an informative view for students through to experienced practitioners, and should have a prominent place on any manager's bookshelf, writes Mark Caldecott.

Although expecting a complex and difficult essay, I found a well-ordered and readable style which dealt with the complex issues while offering a working tool for practice. Luke Clements has provided clear tables of statute, cases, statutory instruments and all the other bits that underpin our daily working lives. The index is also straightforward, making information quick to find.

The test of any legislative guidance is how well it answers the questions that test the practitioner. Here we have informative chapters on ordinary residence, care home accommodation, and NHS responsibilities for community care services.

Other wide-ranging chapters have concise introductions and clear headings. The appendices give key information for legislation, regulation and precedent, and flow diagrams show the links between practice and guidance.

This book is a must for every manager and practitioner working in the field.

Mark Caldecott is manager, older persons' care management team.
