Threat to founders of special school

Parents who set up a special school for their autistic children have been threatened with prosecution unless their children attend mainstream education.

East Sussex Council warned that it may prosecute four families who founded the Step by Step school in Crowborough and who send their children there.

The council said its special needs and disability tribunal had found the school to be inappropriate.

Meanwhile, the Conservative Party announced a review of its policy on special schools last week.

Commenting on special schools, a spokesperson for the Alliance for Inclusion in Education said: "Special schools segregate children from the rest of society, are taken away from their family and grow up feeling excluded and rejected."
