Teenager's payout for poor service

An 18 year old has received thousands of pounds from Stoke Council after he sued them over its alleged failure to provide for his needs.

Lawyers for Marc Weaver, who has Asperger's syndrome, argued that the council had "grievously" failed to meet its duty to secure him long-term accommodation or draw up an adequate plan to prepare him for independent living.

The boy was placed at an emergency care home in South Devon while he waited more than 20 months for suitable accommodation in Stoke.

Weaver's lawyers also sued the council for compensation under the Human Rights Act 1998 for the alleged delay and distress he experienced.

At London's High Court last week the council promised to prepare a detailed care plan within 56 days.

Stoke agreed to make the payment without any admission of liability and on the understanding that Weaver cannot reveal the amount of his payout to anyone outside of his family.
