Bureau to overhaul registration process

The Criminal Records Bureau is to cut the number of registered bodies that can apply for disclosures, following the government's decision to check all adults working with children.

A threshold for the number of applications a body submits will be introduced, with those submitting low numbers ceasing to be registered. All disclosures outside of registered bodies would then have to go through umbrella bodies.

All adults working with children, including nannies and carers employed under direct payment schemes, will be vetted in future, as recommended by the Bichard Inquiry.

The CRB believes cutting registration bureaucracy and improving use of technology will allow it to control costs. "We have the capacity to deal with it," a CRB spokesperson said.
