A paediatrician who has refused to apologise for accusing the husband of Sally Clark of killing their sons has appeared in the High Court to face calls he should be struck off, writes Sally Gillen.

David Southall, who made the accusations after watching a documentary in 2000, was found guilty of serious professional misconduct and banned from child protection work for three years by the General Medical Council last August.

But the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence applied to the High Court for a review of the GMC’s ruling, arguing it was “unduly lenient”.

Barrister Monica Carlss-Fisk, for the CHRE, said Southall had shown “arrogance” and “irresponsibility” over his conduct.

Mark Shaw QC, for Southall, argued he had made just one mistake and the punishment received was more than enough.

Mr Justice Collins reserved his decision.
